Lessons in Hospitality!!

Photos by Jack Waldron

After missing the road to Matala late yesterday afternoon, I arrived in Kalamki, Crete at 8:30 pm, pretty tired and thirsty (for more than just warm water!).  Maria and Michael (married now for 58 years), who own the Knossos Hotel, gave me a cold beer, a bowl of homemade juvalacha soup (Maria and soup pictured below), and didn't want any money in return.  The hospitality I have met from Taiwan to Italy and Sicily, and now in Greece and Crete, has really taught me a great lesson in how to welcome strangers.  Houses have been opened, dinners shared, bills cut and help offered.  I can't thank enough ALL of the wonderful people I have met along this journey, most of whom are not pictured below.  So, if you read this, thank you for your gracious hospitality.  I have learned a great deal from your lessons . . .
Pictured above, friends in Catania, Sicily.  Pictured below, me with my mom in Port Charlotte, Florida, March 2013.
